• Stepping it Up

Having found a rhythm that seems to allow me to actually progress with my running, I decided today to take things up a notch.  I increased my run/walk ratio from 3-to-1 to 3.5-to-1.  I had considered going directly to a 4-to-1 ratio, but I was trying, for once, to be conservative in my estimates of what to expect of myself.  This was very, very smart on my part!

I hadn’t considered the weather in my calculations, so being conservative probably stopped me from having a heart-attack.  It was an undaunting 80 degrees when I ran this morning, but I was completely unprepared for the humidity.  It must have been in the 90% range, because it was like breathing jell-o.

As I’ve previously mentioned, I am magic, so the sun comes out while I run.  Today was no exception.  As I ran, the wet ground was heated up by the sun, and it actually started to steam!  If the air was jell-o before, it was wet cement now.  Long before my legs got around to feeling the burn of the increased exercise, my chest felt like a fat-man was sitting on it, and digging in with his heels!  I literally just couldn’t breathe enough!

I almost gave up three-quarters of the way through, until I realized I was actually having a panic attack from the drowning-like sensations.  Fortunately, I was able to use meditative techniques to get it under control, so I finished my run, just barely.  Next time I increase my efforts, I’m going to have to do a much better job of picking a day with good conditions…
